What is Paddington The Musical about?

The story starts in Peru with a small bear raised on stories about London and the kindness of strangers. He arrives at Paddington Station with a battered suitcase and a jar of marmalade, looking for a place in the world.

The Brown family takes him in, almost by accident. What follows is part adventure, part comedy. When a villain named Millicent Clyde sets her sights on Paddington, the Browns fight to protect him and work out what they mean to each other.

The show draws from Michael Bond's 1958 novel, A Bear Called Paddington. It carries the warmth of the source material without softening into the kind of family theatre that puts half the audience to sleep. London audiences, children and adults alike, kept coming back for second and third visits. That does not happen by accident.

Tom Fletcher — Music and Lyrics

Fletcher is best known as a member of McFly. Paddington is his first major stage work. The score ranges from comic character numbers to ballads that earn their emotional weight. They hold up the way musical theatre songs need to: live, in a room, with 1,400 people listening.

Jessica Swale — Book

Swale has written for Shakespeare's Globe and the National Theatre. Her adaptation of Bond's material keeps the story moving and finds the emotional depth without overstating it.

Luke Sheppard — Director

Sheppard previously directed &Juliet on the West End and Broadway. His work on Paddington is more ambitious, technically and emotionally, than anything he had done before. His Olivier win for Best Director was widely expected before nominations were announced.

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre has stood at 302 West 45th Street since 1924, when it opened as the Martin Beck Theatre. It was renamed in 2003 to honor Broadway caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, whose drawings hang in the mezzanine lobby. The building is a New York City landmark, designed in a Moorish-Byzantine style by G. Albert Lansburgh.

The theatre seats 1,424 people across Orchestra and Mezzanine levels, plus a small number of VIP boxes. It is the westernmost Broadway theatre in the Theater District, just past Eighth Avenue. Previous long-running shows include Kinky Boots, Into the Woods, and Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which ran until August 2026.

Getting there: The closest subway stations are Times Square-42nd Street and Port Authority Bus Terminal, both a short walk away. Parking garages are on 44th, 45th, and 46th Streets within two blocks.
